Experience

Lab Assistant (Fall 2006 to present)
Ice Core Lab, Oregon State University – Corvallis, OR

I am doing methane analysis of horizontal ice core samples from Pakitsoq, Greenland under the guidance of Dr. Ed Brook. This involves working with vacuum systems, gas chromatographs, and sample preparation in a -24ºC freezer. I also assisted in gathering a Siple Dome sample allocation from the National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) in Denver, CO. State University – Corvallis, OR

Lead Technician (2002-2005)
Hi-CLIMB – Nepal & Tibet

I was the lead technician for the National Science Foundation funded Geophysical research project Hi-CLIMB. The project used over 110 broadband seismometers to study the continental collision zone of the Himalayas on a transect that extended over 800km across the Himalayas. This is the largest project of its kind and involved scientists from the USA, Germany, France, Hungary, Nepal, China, Tibet, and Taiwan.

Volunteer (2003-2004)
Porters’ Progress – Nepal

I taught many beginning rock climbing, bouldering, team building, empowerment, and English language classes to porters in Kathmandu and Lukla, Nepal. This instruction was done primarily in Nepali.

Trip Leader & Instructor (2002, 2005 to present)
National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) – Lander, WY

I have taught extended backpacking classes in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. On these trips I taught many topics including Geology, wildlife ecology, land use principles, backcountry cooking, and comprehensive camping skills.
Outdoor Recreation Center, Oregon State University – Corvallis, OR
I teach Leave No Trace, rock climbing and mountaineering classes at Smith Rocks State Park and on Mt. Hood, OR. I also provide logistical support for a variety of other ORC classes and activities.

Lab Assistant (2001-2002)
Coastal Imaging Lab, Oregon State University – Corvallis, OR

I helped analyze beaches around the world with pictures taken by remote cameras. I also organized and led monthly GPS surveys of Agate beach near Newport, OR. These surveys involved multiple people, an amphibious ATV, and very sensitive GPS equipment.

Internship (Summers of 1999 & 2000)
Intel Corporation - Beaverton, OR

I worked on Network Quality Lab’s (NQL) Web Team in producing and publishing their web pages on Intel’s Intranet site. I tested software compatibility and was in charge of writing detailed bug reports.


Skills

Computers - I have worked extensively with many operating systems, including Windows (95, 98, NT, XP), DOS, Mac, UNIX, and Linux. I have worked with and made field repairs of sophisticated scientific equipment. I have some programming experience with multiple languages including Pascal, C, C++, Matlab, HTML, and shell. I am also the system administrator for my family’s web site located at http://www.themitchellfamily.com/
Outdoors - I am an accomplished backpacker, rock climber, and mountaineer with experience in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, Wind River Range, Himalayas, and the Andes. I am a PADI certified Open Water Diver, have a US Level I Avalanche certification, and am a Leave No Trace Master Educator.
Wilderness First Responder - I am a Wilderness Medicine Institute certified Wilderness First Responder. I have gained valuable hands on experience in medical care during my international travels and my time in the wilderness.
Foreign Languages - While I lived in Nepal I learned Nepali and now am fluent at a conversational level. During my travel to South America I expanded my Spanish to a traveler’s vocabulary. I took two years of German in high school.

Travel

South America (Spring 2001)
I went to South America on a three-month long traveling and backpacking trip. My trip took me through Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and briefly into Argentina.

Asia (Fall 2002-2005)
While working for Hi-Climb I lived in Kathmandu, Nepal and Shigatze, China. I was also able to travel and backpack extensively in Nepal, Tibet, and Thailand.


Education

Oregon State University - Corvallis, OR
I am currently pursuing a BS in Geology with a minor in Oceanography at Oregon State University. I expect to graduate in the spring of 2007.
